Political Aspirations
In the last few months, I’ve decided to exercise my civic responsibility and have volunteered with a few political caucuses and committees in my county. To say that these monthly meetings, voter registration events, and fundraising efforts have been enlightening would be an understatement. This year being an election year, I’ve discovered that the political wheel of change when it comes to local and state government is slow, slow, slow. The lack of resources, a large age gap makes pushing individuals to engage and get educated on local politics frustrating. Couple that with the few key players that are in it for personal aspirations and I can see first-hand why people develop a distaste for politics.
I’ve taken the approach to stay out of the fray, and focus on what I know are important to me, but I don’t know if this small foray into local politics will change my mind about pursuing a position in politics, considering that I really don’t do too much and would have to become a woman of the people in order to really be considered a political potential. For now, I’ll keep creating events, finding ways to get people to donate money and support the next small or large election coming up.
